Marketing Your Store
Fetlife is extremely well suited to what is called "Viral Marketing". People follow more links from their friend's profiles (and spend more time on those sites) than click on Fetlife banners. Yes, we run 13,000,000 banner ads a month. However, if you use some or all of these techniques, we could even get more traffic from friends following links on friend's pages than the banner ads will bring us.
These are some basic marketing strategies to use on Fetlife
- To make a live hyperlink
to your store on Fetlife, use the following format: [All Things
Kink][http://www.allthingskink.com/index1.php] You MUST include the http or the link
will not work.
Live links can be posted in your writings, in your profile, in picture
comments, in discussions and in wall comments.
- Track your links! Use
the service http://www.bit.ly to shorten
your URL’s. If you join (for
free), you can create separate tracking codes for each link (groups,
picture comments, wall comments, etc.) that will tell you how many people
click on that link.
- Ask everyone who buys from
you if you may send them a Fetlife Friend Request.
- If they do allow you to
send them a friend request, post a comment on their wall thanking them for
the purchase and insert a link to that product in your store (or your
store only if it was a one of a kind) in that comment.
- Email them pictures of the
item they bought to post on their profile. If they do add one of your pictures to
their profile, post a comment to that picture and provide a link to the
item in your store (or your store only if it was a one of a kind).
- Post regular comments on
your wall. In these, describe new
products you’ve added to your store or your store itself. Again, use live tracking links.
- Ask your customers to refer their friends.
Other ideas (I
haven’t tried these, so they may or may not work), more to follow
- Consider adding a link to
your store below your name whenever you make a comment on any picture or
discussion such as below. You
might want to check with the group owners or moderators; they might not
care for that.

- Join other BDSM related
websites and post a link or banner to your store.
- Blogging – Almost all
blogs allow you to include a link to your website. Find some relevant blogs and post
comments now and then. You might
consider setting up a schedule and doing two blog comments a day on
different blogs. Don’t repeat them
too often. Here’s a Google search
Blog Directories or Lists”
- Link to related
websites. Many sites want you to
trade links and you won’t be able to do that with your store. Others don’t care.
- Use Twitter (www.twitter.com). We are doing all of this with some
Some Twitter ideas:
- Ask buyers to follow you
on Twitter and offer to follow them.
- Use a service such as http://twitterfeed.com/ or www.socialoomph.com to set up
automated feeds of your products.
Using a site like this, you can have all of your product links and
the store link included in a feed and Tweet one of them, say, every two
hours (or whatever interval you choose).
USE YOUR bit.ly tracking links!!!
- www.socialoomph.com will allow you
to set up an automated message to be sent out to all new followers on
Twitter. Make it an invite to
your store, using a tracking link.
- Search for BDSM related
Twitters and follow them. Many of
them will follow you in return.
We’ve started to do all of the above, sending Tweets about each new store and
each new product. Every click through
5. Start a mailing list and send out a newsletter.
People who have bought from you are easier to sell to!!!
Blogging, getting links to your
store on other sites and Tweeting will ALL increase the search engine
visibility of your store. For a brand
new site, we’re already getting quite a bit of search engine traffic. If you follow the “Non-Fetlife” marketing
tips above, everyone will benefit. You
(and the site as a whole) will get more direct traffic, we’ll get more vendors
and content and that will give more visitors a reason to come back and see us
